Boost Mobile Shocks The Value Market With The LG Volt 2

The sub $200 smartphone market is getting awfully crowded. With great devices coming from so many manufacturers, it’s getting harder and harder to justify the expense of those flagship smartphones like the HTC One M9, Samsung Galaxy S6 or iPhone 6. Of course, when you can team that $150 deal with a plan that delivers unlimited talk, text and data for $35 a month, it gets even better. That’s exactly what Boost Mobile and LG have done with their new LG Volt 2 offering.

The LG Volt 2 features a pretty impressive set of specs for a ‘lower end’ device. Running Android 5.1 out of the box, the Volt 2 is up to date with all the latest and greatest Android features. The 2540mAH batter will power through about 20 hours of talk time and should easily last most users through a day of moderate use. The 5” IPS display allows you to view the web and videos in full HD while the 1.2GHz processor keeps the device from locking up on you when you are trying to multitask.

The Volt 2 also features a very strong 8MP camera on the back and a 5MP front shooter. Both cameras can shoot full HD video as well. Those videos can be stored on a microSD card inside the device or uploaded to the video service of your choice over Boost Mobile’s 4G LTE or Enhanced LTE connections. Make sure to check your coverage area to see if the Volt 2 can make use of either of those speedy networks before you rely on that service though.

If the Volt 2 has a negative point, it comes at the expense of the RAM and internal storage. With 1GB of RAM, the device can become a bit overloaded and lag a bit during heavy gaming and screen casting. The 8GB of internal storage is also about the minimum that a phone would want to have on board in today’s market. Android does have the ability to move some Apps to the SD card, but between the bloatware and just plain unnecessary software, they didn’t save users a ton of space for other stuff.

Still, at $149.99, the Volt 2 is quite a bargain. When you combine the $150 price tag on the phone with the $35 a month 1GB LTE plan, the two year cost comes in at $990. If you are willing to take that auto-pay plunge and sign up for Auto Re-Boost, you get an additional GB of data thrown in for free and you monthly cost drops to just $30. That saves an additional $120 over that 24 month period, which makes the final two year cost a lowly $870.
