T-Mobile decided to make things a bit easier for folks wanting to go with a non-credit check option on their network by introducing a few new options in their prepaid portfolio. The three new plans, the $40 – unlimited plan with 1GB of LTE data, the $50 – unlimited plan with 3GB of LTE data or the $60 – unlimited plan with 5GB of LTE data, will be available in stores and online beginning January 25th. These plans also include Wi-Fi calling, but do not include international roaming or tethering.
The press release issued by T-Mobile is where things get very strange though, especially for MVNO users. Previously, T-Mobile has not throttled any of their plan offerings, including those offered through MVNO’s like Ptel Mobile, Straight Talk and Red Pocket Mobile. According to the release, speeds of the new prepaid plans will be limited to 8 Mbps, which is about 25-50% (depending on area) of the actual speeds that T-Mobile’s LTE network is capable of pushing. If this is the case, this may soon trickle down to the MVNO’s and those blazing LTE speeds that users have enjoyed may start disappearing sooner than later.
For now, the offerings are nothing but good news for those already on a single line plan on T-Mobile. Right off the top, if you don’t use that full 2.5GB of data on your Simple Starter plan, you can chop nearly $15 a month off that bill by moving over to the Simply Prepaid 1GB option. Even moving to the higher data allotment in the $50 plan will come out about $5 less due to the fact you aren’t paying taxes on the prepaid offering.
For now, we will keep our money on the MVNO’s like Ptel Mobile, Straight Talk and Red Pocket Mobile. You won’t get the benefit of Wi-Fi calling, the savings is still there and the free month promotions just keep coming.
