Short codes. Many people use them everyday. Yet others have no clue as to what they are. I’ll start with what a short code is, and then let the Solavei user know what happened to them. A short code is a 4-6 digit number that you send a text message to. You may see them for voting on your favorite singer on The Voice, having your bank balance delivered to your phone or even posting to Facebook from a text message. Short codes can pretty much be used for anything.
That said, we now move on to Solavei and ask, “Where’d my short codes go?”
Solavei currently allows for 4, yes that is four, short codes… Their own personal messaging code, Facebook, and Google+. That’s not surprising since they are a social networking site, but the fact that so many are blocked is downright wrong. I do understand the issues that plagued many users long ago, with premium SMS messages that would cost $10 a month or worse, but Solavei has such extreme limits on their offerings that this “unlimited” deal is starting to look less and less attractive to some.
Android and iOS have many texting Apps that run off the phone’s data connection. While Google Voice doesn’t allow short code SMS for the same reasons as Solavei Text Plus Gold will also not allow short codes to pass through their system. I’ll continue to test out a few more of the feature Apps across the board to see if any of them allow SMS codes, but it’s not looking good. Perhaps in time, Solavei will join most other carriers and MVNOs in allowing SMS Short Codes. For now, if you want that bank balance, you better get your bank’s App, setup email alerts to your device
Aesop is a substitute scheduling program my employer uses that seems to be blocked by Solavei, too. Have you encountered this kind of short codes being blocked before?
